Legislature Of North Carolina Ought To Provide For Them. The poor ex-Confederate Vet erans ought to be cared for. It is a disgrace on the State of North Carolina not to do it. Some are wretchedly poor, lamentably ig norant and unable to work. In some instances I know of two their children are not able to do more than supply a scant living for their own families and stein utterly indifferent to the welfare of their parents. When Congress is appropriating more than $150. 000.000.00 for pensions, much of which goes to those who are not .... , . . . tiiiiiiv-u lu uuv. 10 x v. any wonder that some of our old sol diers say: "I might have gone on the other side had I known that I would be in my present condi tion." The Legislature of North Carolina ought to provide for them even if it leaves off the an nual appropriation to the State University. That is what they ought to do, and the people ought to so order J. Sunday morning our town was visited by the most destructive fire within its history. About 3 o'clock policemen discovered the fire in the store of Mr. J. L. Saw yer and immediately turned in an alarm, which was quickly re. sponded to by our efficient De partmeut. The store house was a double one, one sectiou fronts ing Main street and the other section Water street. The fire was burning about the stove, wrhich was used for the comfort of the ladies in the Millinery de partment in the angle of the building. When the doors were opened, it is said tnat hhfrfiumcs seemed to leap at one bound the entire leuyht of both sections and in a moment the entire inside was a mass of devouring Same. In spite of the tirorts of our he roic firemen who worked as we never saw men work before, Fer ebee's Barber Shop, Hathaway Bros. Jewelry house on corner, Culpepper, Griffin, Old : Griee Insurance office, and the apart ments of Mrs. Hill overSelig's handsome Jewelry establishment together with the mammoth hardware score of B. F. White, and the dental office of Dr. S. W. Gregory were consumed one aft er another. The total loss is es timated at $ roo,oco.oo, of which not more than $50,000 00 was covered by insurance.
